Super Paper Mario is a game for the Nintendo Wii. This is a glitch involving the Life Shroom where you can get an extra jump after the animation ends. Specifically, there is a frame (1/60th of a second) where the game thinks Mario is standing on solid ground before realizing he is in midair. During this frame, you can either hit 2 to jump again, or you can hit A to change from 3D to 2D and get an extra jump easier this way.
In this video, I demonstrate how you can use this extra jump to skip getting Thoreau, talking to Old Man Watchitt, and getting Green to activate the bridge to the End of Chapter block of Chapter 1-2. To take damage in midair, I time my 3D meter so it runs out near the peak of my jump over the pit. As the text afterwards implies, Thoreau still joins your party after the end of Chapter 1-2.
